I had a perfect wallpaper of one of the famous places in Nepal, Goshainkunda. I had forgotten where I saved the original picture. My parents entered my room and they wanted to see the picture up close but due to the scattered icons in my desktop, they are unable to see it clearly. Well I just made some changes which is explained below and all the desktop icons were gone and only wallpaper was visible full screen.

  • Right Click in any empty space of desktop
  • Click “Arrange Icons By”
  • You will notice a tick mark at “Show Desktop Icons”
  • I just unchecked it and Viola! All the icons were gone.

This process is reversible. To have it done irreversible from Windows, you can edit some values in Windows Registry and simply hide the icons forever. Below is the process for hiding all icons from desktop via Windows Registry.

  • Go to Start -> Run
  • Type “regedit” (regedit = Registry Editor)
  • Navigate to: HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer
  • Right click on the right panel and add a New DWORD
  • Name it NoDesktop
  • Give it a value of 1
  • Exit Registry and restart the computer

When the Windows is loaded, you will notice all icons are hidden on the desktop. Wasn’t it just simple? It really is fun working and finding ways with registry. :)
