System Properties

I had once installed another version of Windows 98 that my friend brought. It had everything preinstalled and we had to install nothing but to edit some settings. The awkward thing that bugged me was their logo and their name in the manufacturer and support information in system properties. I searched the entire registry with their manufacturer name but couldn’t found a trace. Then I found out that it wasn’t registered in registry but it was embedded in INI file which was in my system folder. I then edited the name and changed the logo back then. I tried it now in my new version of Windows XP and found out that it works well in Windows XP as well. I have described the process below.

  • Navigate to the Windows system directly, normally “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM” for Windows 95, 98 and Me and “C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32″ for Windows NT and 2000, and “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32″ for Windows XP.
  • Find the INI file called “OEMINFO.INI”.
  • If there isn’t one, create the file by opening a notepad name it as OEMINFO.INI.
  • Copy and paste the following in the OEMINFO.INI file.

[General]
Manufacturer=Your Company, Inc.
Model=Your Computer Model
SupportURL=http://www.yoursite.com

[Support Information]
Line1=first line of support information
Line2=second line
Line3=third line

LineN=nth line
(You can create as many lines as you need by incrementing the line number)

To change the logo file,

  • Again go to the Windows system directory ( “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32″ )
  • Find OEMLOGO.BMP and if there isn’t create one with your desired logo.
  • Remember the standard Windows bitmap file is 160 x 114 pixels in Windows XP

Once you have created both these files open System Properties from Control Panel or simply right click My Computer and then properties. You will notice your company information and logo has been updated as you desired. The details you entered in the [Support Information] section will show up when you click on the Support Information button.
