Recently one of my friend’s brothers had some problem with faxing some important documents. The problem was he has no fax machine nearby and had to travel around 45-minute road in order to fax those documents. I knew that we can easily fax the documents from his laptop or personal computer but the problem was I wasn’t sure how. I knew that one of my friends had faxed before from his computer but he had installed some software. I knew we don’t have to install anything as our dial-up modem has fax modem in it as well but the problem was finding the process or software to fax from my personal computer.
I googled some of the sites and finally was about to figure out how to fax the documents from my computer. I have tried to describe the process below and also tried to manage some snap shots of the process so that it would be easier for my readers. Again all you need is:
- A PC/laptop with Microsoft Windows XP
- Telephone Line
- Dial-up/fax modem
- Phone extension cable or a device like the GE InstaJack, which easily lets you extend your phone lines over your AC wiring.
You don’t have to pay extra for the Internet fax service but you will be charged for the fax in your telephone bill where you fax the details (long-distance faxes are charged with the regular rates as well).
Below is the process to Add Fax Services with step-by-step instruction with the snapshots.
1. Adding Fax Services
- Go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
- Click Add/Remove Windows Components. (Windows XP Setup will then start)
- Check next to Fax Services, click Next, and follow the prompts. (You might have to insert your Windows XP CD for this process)
Then close the wizard process after the adding the fax services in your system.
2. Control Panel
- Again Navigate to Control Panel. (Start Menu > Control Panel)
- Notice a Fax item is added to the Printers and Faxes control panel.
- To send a note on a cover sheet, double-click the Fax icon.
3. Start a Fax
The first time you use the Fax, you’ll be prompted to enter the information that you’ll want to appear on your fax cover sheets.
If you want to fax the word documents instead of any image file:
- Open Microsoft Word and the document you want to fax.
- Go to File Menu> Print > Choose Fax as your printer. (You may also find it easier to use Word’s Fax Wizard, which you can access through the File menu’s Send To option.)
If you want to fax the old papers or image file using scanner:
- Scan the documents or files with your scanner
- Open Microsoft Office Document Imaging utility
- Print them to the Fax printer
remote access to a pc in order to be able to work remotely
