Everyone knows that defragging can realistically improve the performance of your hard disk. But, the default Disk Defragment utility that comes with Windows XP is slow, & doesn’t has much options.
Defragmenting Boot Files
Window XP has the ability to defragment the boot files which was not possible in earlier version of Windows. By default the defragment of boot files is enabled but in case it is not, you can do so by checking the registry.
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
- Find the “enable” setting
- If it is set to ‘N’, set this to ‘Y’ to enable to enable defragment of boot files
You can also defragment your hard disk from the command line. Running it from the command line gives you much more control over the defragment process. To defragment a hard disk labeled “C:” type “defrag C:”
Forcing Defragment
Sometimes the Disk Defragmenter wouldn’t defragment you hard disk. The most common reason is that the Disk Defragmenter needs at least 15% free hard disk space to defragment a hard disk. In this case, you can force the defragment of a hard disk by typing “defrag C: /F” at the command prompt, where C: is the drive you want to defragment (you can change the drive name for other specific drives you want to defrag).
Defragging More Effectively With Diskeeper
There are many third-party tools that do a more effective job of defragmentation. One such tool is Diskeeper.
Using diskeeper for more effective defragment
Diskeeper can automatically defragment a hard disk on bootup, allows you to remotely schedule boot-time defragmentation on multiple machines, will let system administrators create different defragmentation schedules for different groups of machines, will defragment disks that have little free disk space, and makes it easy to deploy on multiple machines.
Diskeeper includes a feature called InvisiTasking which continually defrags the disk while not impacting system resources. It really works like a charm.
The end result is: Faster Computer… Period.
